MINUTES
Minutes from our January 24, 2010 guild meeting, held at the Cody Senior Citizen Center, was begun at 7PM with an introduction by our president Evelyn Browning.

** Prior to our meeting about 13 ladies met at the Sunset House for Dinner Diners. Good food, lively conversations, and lots of laughs. Feel free to join us, we'd love your company!
** 31 or 32 women attended (I got so caught up in the evening, I lost count). We had 7 guests, 3 of whom joined our guild that evening. Welcome!
** Everyone introduced themselves and told us how long they have been guild members. Several members have been in over 20 years. Barbara Harrison received a box of petit-fours for the longest, 24 years! Good for you Barb!
** Ann Trosper gave a brief demo on the pattern Carpenter's Wheel. She plans on giving a class at the Cody Library after Feb 20th. She had a sign up sheet, and an email would be sent to everyone at a later date.
** The minutes and treasurer's reports from December were approved.
** A get well card was passed around for Ann Jefferis, who was to have had shoulder surgery today.
** RE: PPQG profit/non-profit status: Marybeth Richardson said we should not do IRS non-profit 501c3. The committee ( made up of Marybeth and Laura Mangun) recommended we get an EIN# and then apply to the Wyoming Secretary of State for non-profit status. The motion was made, seconded and passed.
** There were no committee reports, however, it was noted that Sandy Welch and new member Trisha Holliday took over the Social Committee from Jeanne Dycus and Jeannette Brewster. Thank you past and present volunteers.
** Show 'n Tell was lovely and inspiring, as always.
** Then came the highlight of the evening. New member Karen Herburger delighted us with a wonderful trunk show. What a variety of creative, colorful quilts...from traditional to art quilts, hand and machine worked, each one bringing "oohs and aahs" from the rest of us.
The 2010 budgets were gone over, a motion to accept, seconded, and approved.
Respectfully submitted by Jeannette Brewster for Ann Jefferis

Something's Brewing  - by Jeanette Brewster
After 5 days of road trips, I went to bed last night planning today at home. I got side-tracked when I put on the TV while having my breakfast and How To Make An American Quilt had just started. I saw it when it first came out in 1995 with 5 fellow quilters when we lived in Maine. Great movie, full of the foibles and frailties of the six women creating a "love quilt" (all done by hand, though not by the actresses ). The story lines, the lives of these women and of the people who impacted them, past, present, future....are not far removed from our own. The quilt was exquisite. My only complaint comes near the end of the movie, and I think you would agree with me, should you remember it. The movie, the book by Whitney Otto, and the quilt patterns are worth revisiting.

Now it's on to what I had originally planned on doing, baking pear-raspberry little heart pies. I leave you with this.

"Love is like the wild rose-briar;
Friendship like the holly-tree.
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms,
But which will bloom most constantly?"

Tips for Resolving Tension Issues
by Susan Brubaker Knapp, published in Quilting Daily e-newsletter, 12-10-09.,  excerpts below.

Machine stitching tension problems are tricky to resolve because there are so many variables. Here are some things to try:
1. Completely remove the top thread and the bobbin thread, and rethread the machine. Always thread your machine with the presser foot up. It sounds too simple a solution to work, but sometimes that's all it takes.
2. Change the bobbin thread. Try a different kind of thread (polyester or monofilament), or a finer (higher number) thread.
3. Try a different type or weight of top thread. Discard old, brittle thread.
4. Use the correct spool pin. Cross-wound thread should be placed on a horizontal spool pin. Parallel-wound (also called "stacked") thread should be placed on a vertical spool pin.
5. Make sure your bobbin is wound correctly. It should be wound at medium speed, and, when done, should be firm and snug on the bobbin.
6. Seeing bobbin thread on the top? Bobbin tension could be too loose, or top thread tension could be too tight. Tighten bobbin tension first. Turn the bobbin case screw clockwise to tighten. Move it a tiny amount at a time. (Caution: Always note the position of the bobbin case screw before you change it. You can mark it with a fine-tip permanent marker on the case itself. Some people prefer to purchase a second bobbin case for tension adjustments.)
7. If problems persist on the top, loosen the top thread tension (move it to a lower number, one number at a time until the tension is right).
8. Seeing top thread on the underside? The top thread tension could be too loose, or bobbin tension could be too tight. First, tighten the top thread tension (move it to a higher number, one number at a time).
