Judged Quilt Categories

Determining categories is one of the most difficult tasks of putting on a judged quilt show.  There will always be someone who feels their quilt fits best in a category that doesn't exist.  We are limited by practical considerations however, so decisions must be made and we cannot have a separate category for every quilt in the show.  On the other hand, entrants may well find their quilt fits in more than one category.  In that case we ask you to choose the category that best fits your entry.  If the receiving committee determines your quilt would be better suited to a different category than the one you entered, we reserve the right to reclassify it.

Definitions and explanations:
Quilt - At lease three layers held together by multiple stitches. "Tied" quilts are not permitted except in the Youth category.
Bed Quilt - The primary purpose of the quilt is as a bed covering. May include all sizes from baby quilts to king size.
Wall Quilt - The primary purpose of the quilt is decorative. Includes all sizes except "small" (see below).
Small
- Equal to or less than 18" per side, i.e. a maximum perimeter of 72"
Pieced and appliqué - If a quilt contains both, it should be entered in the category that best describes the majority of the work in the piece.
Traditional - Using fabrics, designs and techniques as they have been used historically.
Innovative - A unique twist has been added to the design or the techniques used in the quilt.
Other - Anything that does not fit into the pieced or appliqué category. May include whole-cloth, painted, shadow trapunto, crazy quilts, etc.
Group - Any quilt on which more than one person participated. Includes those quilted by professionals.
Original Design/Art - The work was designed by the individual entering the quilt exclusively for their use (i.e. not as a commercial pattern). Novelty quilts created from a pattern must be entered under "traditional".
Youth
- Age 18 and under.
Clothing - A significant portion of the entry must be quilted. Clothing may be lined but that does not preclude the requirement to have stitching through three layers.
